Opinion | The Best Extracurricular May Be an After-School Job

Personally, I learned more working outside school than I did in the classroom.

www.nytimes.com

요약

- The writer believes that extracurricular activities - especially working experience - are essential for teenagers. She lists up waht she could learn from doing part time jobs as a student, and says working experiences would give students precious lessons, hence teenagers should get a job even if they don't need to work to support their families. A sense of independence, responsibility, and time management skills are things that collage students lack of, so after school jobs can be a good opportunity for that, the writer added.

  • extracurrirular : an extracurrirualr activity or subject is not part of the usual school or collage course.
  • lament : to express sadness or feeling sorry about something. (The poem opens by lamenting the death of a young man)

  • Conditions couldn't be more optimal.
  • ...older teenagers holding down a job of one kind or another.
  • Consider that having an afternoon job cultivates skills like time management and instills a sense of independence and personal responsibility
  • Being fired isn't the end of your career, and neither is quitting.
  • You're being paid for your time.
  • ...my arithmetic also got a regular workout.

  • as far as I'm concerned
  • allow for 고려하다
  • take after 닮다

Andy took on a mini project as a freelancer for the first time. It requires great sense of responsibility but at the same time Andy felt he is given wide latitude to control every aspect of the project by himself. He was in his element, he could make better outcomes freelancing. Even the projects seem to be a lackluster, he took it on. But, he had to allow for his schedule. He got swamped and started to feel suffocated by too much work. Once he completely missed the due day and a strange client blamed him for taking after his lazy brother.

allow for 이라는 단어는 그냥 allow 와 다르다. allow for 은 take into consideration 와 비슷한 의미를 가진다.
make allowance for 의 형태로 사용할 수도 있다.

as far as I'm concerned

  • break a sweat : to begin to sweat; 물리적으로도 쓰고 무엇이 전혀 힘들지 않았다고 강조할때도 didn't break a sweat으로 쓰임

It was her driving test day. Coaches said she's talented and she did so well during practices without even breaking a sweat. Everyone thought she was going to pass the test, there was no reservations. Everything looked fine, outwardly. She felt something went wrong as she sped up on the highway. Probably it was spoiled food! She started to feel very anxious. The speed was very high, her head turned delusional. If she crashes, there's gonna be substantial amount of cost she has to cover. She tried to ignore the pain in order to drive safely.

1. consist of

to be made of or formed from something -으로 만들어진

ex) It's simple dish to prepare, consisting mainly of rice and vegetables.
ex) Many jazz trios consist of a piano, guitar and double bass.

  • opt out
  • opt for
  • opt in
  • ...

1. opt for something, opt to do something

to choose some option in preference to others.

ex) I always opt for first class when I fly overseas.
ex) Personally, I'd opt for light breakfast.
ex) He would opt to take a taxi.
ex) We’re on a tight budget, we’ll probably opt for the one that costs the least.

2. opt out

to choose not to be part in an activity or stop being involved in it.
선택하지 않는다를 부정어 없이 표현할 수 있는 단어이다. stop taking part in it 의 표현도 중요하니 같이 알고 있어야한다. opt out of ~ 의 형태로도 자주 쓰임.

ex) Within any society, there will usually be people who decided to opt out. (=choose not to live the way most people do)
ex) If you opt out before December 1st, your deposit will be refunded.
ex) She has the right to opt out.

3. opt in

opt out 의 반대되는 뜻이다. to choose to do, be involved in something.

ex) He didn't exactly opt out because he never opted in.
ex) The British government was reluctant to opt into such a system.

Hardly

hardly 의 짝꿍단어가 몇 있는데 hardly ever, hardly any, hardly anyone 이다.

- There's hardly any savings left.
- We hardly ever talk to each other.
- I hardly speak Spanish.
- I could hardly believe what he said.
- You hardly know me.
- There was hardly anyone in the room.

Barely

사전에는 by the smallest amount 라고 정의한다.

- We barely know each other.
- It was barely audible.
- I could barely eat.
- When that accident occured, she was barely 5.
- I barely noticed what was happening.

Merely

- I wasn't complaining. I merely said that I was tired.
- It's merely matter of time.
- I didn't say you have to go. I merely suggested that you might want to go.
