pull up

- 들어올리다, 차 (혹은 다른 탈것) 를 잠시 멈추다,
- (pull someone up) : 잘못했다고 말하다, 제지하다
- 컴퓨터스크린에있는 정보를 띄우다
- pull up a chair : 의자를 당기다
- improve 의 의미도 있음

 ex) A car pulled up outside my car, The boar pulled up at the dock. he pulled up next to me.
He pulled up in his car (자기 차에 앉은 채로 차를 세웠다).   He pulled up to the gate. (게이트에 차를 세웠다)
ex) She's always pulling me up on my bad spelling.
ex) He pulled up a chair behind her and put his chin on her shoulder.

pull down

- 파괴하다 부수다
- 끌어내리다, 낮은 곳으로 물건을 가져오다, 가격을 내리다 (체온, 등급, 상태 등등 -> 괴롭게하다 로 확장될수도있음)
- 돈을 벌다 (얼마인지 언급이 되는 경우)

ex) They pulled down the warehouse to build a new supermarket.
ex) The virus she had really pulled her down; she still hasn't fully recovered. Lower colthing prices will pull down the cost of the family shopping basket.
ex) They must be pulling down over $100,000 a year.

pull out

- (탈것) 출발하다
- 빠지다 (활동이나 조약에서 빠져나오다) - pull out of ~
- 꺼내다

ex) She pulled out into the street. Pull out of the parking lot and turn left.
ex) We can cut project costs by pulling out all non-essential staff.
ex) The dentist pulled out my tooth. Somebody pulled some pages out of the book.
ex) They've pulled al their athletes out of the competition.

pull over

- (탈것) 갓길에 차를 세우다

ex) The car pulled over and a man got out.

pull back

- 뒷걸음치다, 상황에서 빠지다
- (군대) 철수하다
- 가격, 비율 등이이 떨어지다
- 지는 상황에서 득점? (스포츠)

ex) He leaned forward to kiss her but she pulled back. He pulled back from her nother and wiped the tears from her eyes.

She and I were in a train bound for Spain. She said she wasn't gonna go, but turned up last minute and we got on the train. I don't know where we're gonna stay during the trip, but that's beside the point. We spoke next to nothing to each other so far. I really want this relationship to be on a roll.

be bound for 은 이동수단이 어디 목적지로 향한다고 할 때 쓴다.  A Taxi bound for Seoul, A plane bound for New York 이런 식으로 써도 되고 We're bound for LA 이런식으로 써도 된다. 
**be bound to 와 헷갈리면 안되는데 to 를 사용하면 완전 다른 뜻으로, -해야한다는 의무를 나타내거나, - 할 수 밖에 없다 같은 의미가 된다. 

show up 이 나타나다라는 뜻이라서 헷갈리는데 turn up 은 좀 더 기다림 끝에 예상치 못하게 나타난다는 뉘앙스를 살짝 풍기는 듯 하다. 그래서 turn 이 사용되는 듯 하다...

By no means

의미
- by no means = not at all
- not in any way
- not by any means
(used as an emphasizing a negative statement)

certainly not, definietely not 대신에 바꿔쓰면 좋은 표현이다. 익숙하지 않아서 잘 못쓰는데 일부러라도 쓰고 그래야 입에 붙어서 다음에도 사용하게 된다. 의무감을 가지고서라도 써보면 결국 내 표현으로 만들 수 있을 것이다.

예문
- By no means are you going to the movies tonight if you haven't finished your homework.
- By no means am I going to my ex-boyfriend's wedding, why did he invite me?
- I told her we wouldn't tolerate her teasing other kids at school by any means.

By all means

의미
- used to give permission.
- to tell someone that you are very willing to allow them to do something.

Certenly, "물론이죠, 그러세요" 같은 뉘앙스이다. 정중한 permission

- By all means, take another slice of cake if you'd like.
- You're welcome to use our car if you need it by all means.
- I told him by all means he could stay at our house.

- By all means, ask anything you want to know.

가끔 까다로운 단어를 만난다. given 이 그 대표적인 예이다. 분사형으로 사용되는데, 이렇게도 쓰이고 저렇게도 쓰이고, 마주치면 어떻게 해석해야할지 감이 안 잡힐 때도 있다. 캠브릿지 사전을 훑어보면서 이 단어를 공략해보도록 하자.

Knowing about or considering a particular thing. -를 고려하면, - 인 것을 고려하면  정도로 해석이 된다.

EX - Given his age, he's a remarkably fast runner. 
Given the fact that he's had six months to do this, he hasn't made much progress.

예문만들기 : Given that he's been playing the piano for so long, his performance last night leaves a lot to be desired.
Given the time constraints we had, this is the best outcome.

Something that is certain to happen. 명사로 쓰이는 given 이다. "as a given" 처럼 덩어리로 자주 쓰인다. "예정된 것, 당연한 것" 으로 해석하면 큰 무리 없을 것 같다. 

EX - You can take it as a given that there will be champagne at the wedding.
It's a given that if he is defeated for reelection, he'll be offered a position in the administration.

예문만들기 : It seems like many foreigners take it as a given that they can communicate in english anywhere in the world.

Already decided, arranged or agreed 정해진, 주어진 으로 해석해면 될 것 같다. at any given time, at any given moment 등으로 자주 쓰인다.

EX - At any given time, the jury may reach a verdict, so we'd better stay nearby.

예문만들기: I was told to finish it within a given time.

Given is used when indicating a possible situation in wich someone has the opportunity or ability to do something. 주어진, 고려하면 등 위에서 체크했던 의미와 연장선상에 있다는 느낌을 준다. given the chance 가 if I had the chance 로 해석된다고 한다.

EX - Write down the sort of thing you would like to do, given the opportunity. 
Given patience, successful breeding of this species can be achieved.

회화에 자주 쓰이지만 헷갈리는 단어 3개를 정리하려고 합니다. 

1. discreet, 2. incident, 3. dependable 이 세가지 입니다.

discreet는 저는 며칠전에 처음 알게된 표현입니다.

하지만 사실 정말 유용하고 많이 쓰이는 표현이었어요.

"조심스러운" 으로 번역될 수 있습니다. 반의어는 indiscreet 이군요.

I'm very discreet about~ 는 나는 ~에 대해서 매우 신중하고 조심스럽다 라는 뜻이 되겠죠

알아두시면 좋은 점은 discrete 라는 단어는 발음이 같은데 "별개의, 분리된" 이라는 뜻입니다.

incident 는"사고" 라는 뜻 입니다.

이미 알고 계시는 분들이 더 많을 것 같긴 하지만 은근히 헷갈리는 단어라고 생각해서 가지고 왔는데 어떻게 쓰이는 지 한번 보고 넘어가면 기억에 더 오래 남겠죠?

It's a serious incident 그건 심각한 사고야. 

a shooting incident 총기사고

dependable 어떤 뜻일 것 같나요? depend...는 나름이다 뭐 이런 뜻을 가지고있는데요

관련이 없지 않습니다. 

신뢰살 수 있는, 믿을 수 있는, 의지할 수 있는 으로 해석이 됩니다. 정확한 뉘앙스는 문장 안에서 구분하실 수 있겠습니다. 

He is a dependable worker.

I need a dependable car.

at one's wits' end

Meaning

Idiom:  at one's wit's end

• so completely frustrated and upset that you're unsure what to do
• to be so distressed you don't have any more patience with someone/something

예문을 보면 두번째 의미로 훨씬 더 많이 쓰이는 듯 하다. 바닥나서 더이상 -할 힘이 남아있지 않은 느낌

be anxious to

anxious는 불안한 이런 단어로만 알고있었는데 아래 블로그에 매우 잘 정리되어있다. anxious는 쥐어짜이는, 고통스러워하는 그림이라고 한다. anxious about 이라고 하면 -때문에 고통스러워하는 이지만 for 이 붙으면 -을 위해서 고통스러워하는, 그래서 열망하는 의 뜻이 된다.

All his efforts ended in vain 처럼 문장 끝에서도 쓸 수 있지만

because of - 의 느낌도 살짝 있다.

see someone off 라고 하면 누구를 마중나가다 라는 뜻이 된다.
