[영어단어] 배운 단어로 짧은 영작 (30) - lurk, ward off, set about

• think on your feet 빠른 결정, 답변을 하다, 빨리 반응하다
• lurk 숨다, 눈팅하다

I remember an anecdote from a friend. When he set about job hunting, he went to a job interview while he was a drunk. With the sense of vertigo, he passed through 3 job interview processes there, really thinking on his feet for every question. Once he was sober, he really lost heart that he missed the chance of getting a job, he could hardly remember what he said in the interviews. He got a rejection of course, he now wards off any similar situations. It's a good life lesson I think, when we take a borad view. I'm really impressed that he was able to get across what he wants to say in that state to the panels! We have drifted apart, I'm wondering if he's doing well. Maybe I should lurk on social media.

set about 의 의미를 잘 기억해두자. 착수하다는 뜻도 있지만 사람 앞에 오면 공격하다는 뜻도 된다. 둘 다 행위를 시작하는 달려드는 그림이다. 그래서 뭔가 시작할때 열정적인 뉘앙스를 풍긴다. 

think on one's feet 은 누워있거나 앉아있는게 아니라 서서 있어서 바로 태세가 잡혀 빠르게 반응할 수 있는 것을 말한다. 발빠르게 대응한다 같이 발을 이용한 표현이다.  긍정적인 뉘앙스가 있다. 능력으로 인정도 해준다.

pass through 는 다양한 뜻이 있다.
pass through immigration checkpoint/ pass through a tunnel/ pass meat through a grinder/ pass through a school / pass through the eye of a needle -몹시 좁은 곳을 빠져나가다

get something across 는 매우 중요하니 예문까지 세트로 외우면 좋다
We tried to get our point across, but he just wouldn't listen. / This is the message that we want to get across to the public. / The novel is good at getting the experience of war across to the reader. / He managed to get his idea across.

grow apart 는 좀 더 관심사나 진로나 뭔가 발달되는게 달라서 자연스레 점점 멀어지는 느낌이고 drift apart 는 aimless 하게 멀어지는 (연락을 안해서, 다른 지역에 살다보니 자연스럽게) 멀어지는 느낌 매우 작은 뉘앙스 차이가 있다.
